Hello all. My name is Greg Ewing, gewing from the Herogames boards. (clever, huh?;)) I have been on the list for a long time, I'm making another attempt to actually get the character written up, submitted, and get involved.
Here is kind of a prospectus, I guess.
My character concept is a very old, tired and bitter retired military hardshell cyborg. He fought in the CW2, and is very bitter about the fact that "HIS COUNTRY" no longer exists.
His cyborg body is a technically obsolete model, that is part of how he managed to keep it. Newer models do not need to look like 7 1/2 foot gorillas to have the abilities he has. :) He was demilitarized, which means that he has NO internal weapons, they even took his jump jets "because they thought they might be hazardous or some such bs."
He was designed to be an "assault borg" able to basically ignore weapons that were not intended to damage armored vehicles. Part of the reason for the unusual body configuration is that some "genius" came up with a "perfect weapon" for his class. It was kind of an oversized grenade launcher/low velocity cannon, that fired a variety of different rounds. It worked GREAT, except that it was 300lbs, had two selectable 20 round magazines, and was so bulky that it couldn't be fired from a prone position. SURE, it could blow holes in walls, or kill tanks from the side or rear, and the Canister anti-personnel round was NASTY, but it also tended to jam about once in every magazine. It was effectively retired, though they were kept around for mounting on fortresses, armored vehicles, and the like. One unit actually managed to get them to function reliably!
His body incorporates significant armor, but some portion of his external armor was also removed, leaving him with basically his underwear, as he thinks of it. This is still enough to handle most small arms, but he misses the ability to ignore most hits from weapons smaller than 20mm.
As I mentioned, the body is basically obsolete. Modern bodies can be just as strong, though few are much more heavily armored. They also tend to be faster. The fact that if necessary, they can fit into powered armor, or normal vehicles is a big plus.
They might have transferred him into a more modern body, but several problems intervened. His life support enclosure, the Kilgore Mark3 M(military) is an obsolete, though very sturdy and reliable model. Only a very few bodies are still made that have the appropriate connections, and they still need an optional head, as it is oversized. The ones that have the right connections tend to be the absolute baseline. One is the box on wheels temporary model, and the other is the cheapie popularly known as the "Kryton"
There was a plan to transfer him to another enclosure, but he was not ready to accept that. As it happens, he was a prior service who Re-enlisted during the war, before he got blown to pieces, and eventually rebuilt. When pressure started being put on him to be "modernized" he pulled out the regulations and pointed out that the mandatory age for military retirement is STILL 65 years old. The Regs were not re-written with cyborgs in mind, and he was not a general officer, subject to call up from retirement at any age. When things started getting heated, he put a call in to an old friend, who WAS now a General Officer. When Major General Steven Gott reminded the Major in Personnel that the REST of the Mark 5 Assault cyborg parts had been sold as surplus, and to quit giving the Warrant Officer problems, well, most of the problems went away.
He tried to make a new life outside the military, but he wasn't really interested in mercenary or security work. He was comfortably well off, not having had many personal expenses for the last several years, and having made some pretty good investments. Sure, he lost 75 percent of his assets because of the war, but most of the companies survived, and he still had his stocks.
I'm thinking that he could very easily drift to Hong Kong. He doesn't feel ANY of the "successor states" is really "His country" and becoming an expatriate is on old tradition... Hong Kong is also probably the best place to find cybertechnicians and doctors who will not cause problems...
As I said, he isn't really anxious to go back to war, as he thinks of it. Before he re-enlisted, he ran a restaurant, and that might be a decent base for him. Called the Eclectic Eel, he makes a range of foods, many of the main dishes are cajun or creole, and the desserts are the true stars.
He probably has found a few employees, so that he is not Always in the kitchen. (anyone else watch "Chef") :D
