Well, the idea is not to be a combat monster; the idea is to survive as a 
nat when everyone around you is levitating buildings.  Doc did it with a 
*lot* of armor...then again, there's nothing saying that other characters 
couldn't do armor.

To a certain extent, such a character might need a plotline assist.
