The current "split" in the U.S. is more urban/rural than anything else.
However, the split in K5 results in large part from food shortages,
ecological damage, and other maladies which lead to a drastic economic
restructuring and might exacerbate a split along some different lines...so
by and large you have free rein to come up with some creative means to
break apart the U.S.
A more resurgent South in the 1960s - let's say that the Civil Rights
Movement was still an ongoing concern until late in the 70s or early in
the 80s, or that the American Party of George Wallace was able to continue
as a viable force - could result in simmering Southern nationalism into
the age of troubles that later struck North America. Or a charismatic
nationalist leader could rise late in the game and promote Southern
interests. Or, certain corporate interests centered in the South rekindle
Confederate sympathies in order to harm sales of Northern products and
deny them a foothold in their backyard.
Or you could use Price of Freedom combat rules...
