I showed this link to a guy I work with from Canada, he had some
observations to share. Interestingly enough, global warming isn't the
only cause of the trouble, part of it is financial.
The government and logging industry noted that wood from certain trees
has a higher value than others, so through their intervention (Fire
Control, Girdling, etc..) they produce vast areas of single stand (mono
culture) forest with all the same species of tree. So when something
like this happens; a bug or disease that preys on one species of tree,
it has a constant source of hosts and can wipe out the entire forest.
More modern minded forestry calls for a mixture of species, and some US
forests are more resistant to something like this because we see more of
a mix of coniferous and non-coniferous (deciduous) trees.
